Ondansetron or Zofran blocks the action of chemicals in the body that can cause nausea and vomiting.
zofran tablet is used to avoid nausea and vomiting that could be caused by surgery, cancer chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
Zofran can be used for reasons not mentioned in this Guide to Medicine.
This prescription is used alone or along with other drugs to alleviate nausea and vomiting caused by cancer treatment (chemotherapy) and radiation therapy. It is also used to avoid and treat nausea and vomiting after surgery. It works by blocking one of the body’s natural substances (serotonin) which causes vomiting.
To prevent chemotherapy nausea, usually take this medicine by mouth within 30 minutes of the start of treatment. To avoid sickness from radiation therapy, take this drug by mouth 1 to 2 hours before beginning the treatment.
To prevent nausea after surgery, take ondansetron by mouth 1 hour before the start of surgery. This drug can be taken with or without food. Your doctor may advise you not to eat before chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.
If you are taking the liquid version of this drug, use a special measuring spoon or instrument to measure the prescription dosage. Do not use a household spoon because you may not have the right dosage.
Take any other doses as directed by your doctor. Ondansetron may be taken up to 3 times daily for 1 to 2 days after the completion of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. If you are taking this drug on a prescription regimen, take it frequently and get the most of it. To make you remember, take it every day at the same time.
The dose of Zofran tablet is dependent on the current diagnosis and medication reaction. The amount for children may also be based on age and weight. The average daily dosage in patients with severe liver disorders is 8 milligrams every 24 hours. Take this drug precisely as instructed. Please do not take more pills or take them more often than prescribed. If you have any questions, ask the doctor or pharmacist.
Tell your doctor if your health is not progressing or if it is getting worse.
Zofran tablets treat the following conditions.
You should not use Zofran if you are using apomorphine (Apokyn) as well.
You should not use Zofran if you are allergic to ondansetron or related drugs such as dolasetron (Anzemet), granisetron (Kytril), or palonosetron (Aloxi).
Zofran oral disintegrating tablets may contain phenylalanine. Tell the doctor if you are getting phenylketonuria (PKU).
Severe side effects include blurred vision or transient vision loss (lasting for a few minutes or several hours), slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, nausea, agitation, shivering, feeling like you could be out, and urinating less than usual or not at all.
Avoid taking Zofran tablet and contact the doctor immediately if you have any of these side effects. Ondansetron can inhibit your thoughts or reactions. Be vigilant whether you drive or do something you need to be alert to.
Take the missing dose as soon as you realize. Skip the missing dose if it's about time for the next planned dose. Do not take any more medication to make up for the missed dosage.
