How to use your Zofran tablet.

To prevent chemotherapy nausea, usually take this medicine by mouth within 30 minutes of the start of treatment. To avoid sickness from radiation therapy, take this drug by mouth 1 to 2 hours before beginning the treatment.

To prevent nausea after surgery, take ondansetron by mouth 1 hour before the start of surgery. This drug can be taken with or without food. Your doctor may advise you not to eat before chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.

If you are taking the liquid version of this drug, use a special measuring spoon or instrument to measure the prescription dosage. Do not use a household spoon because you may not have the right dosage.

Take any other doses as directed by your doctor. Ondansetron may be taken up to 3 times daily for 1 to 2 days after the completion of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. If you are taking this drug on a prescription regimen, take it frequently and get the most of it. To make you remember, take it every day at the same time.

The dose of Zofran tablet is dependent on the current diagnosis and medication reaction. The amount for children may also be based on age and weight. You should not use Zofran if you are using apomorphine (Apokyn) as well.

You should not use Zofran if you are allergic to ondansetron or related drugs such as dolasetron (Anzemet), granisetron (Kytril), or palonosetron (Aloxi).

Zofran oral disintegrating tablets may contain phenylalanine. Tell the doctor if you are getting phenylketonuria (PKU).

Severe side effects include blurred vision or transient vision loss (lasting for a few minutes or several hours), slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, nausea, agitation, shivering, feeling like you could be out, and urinating less than usual or not at all.

Avoid taking Zofran tablet and contact the doctor immediately if you have any of these side effects. Ondansetron can inhibit your thoughts or reactions. Be vigilant whether you drive or do something you need to be alert to.


What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missing dose as soon as you realize. Skip the missing dose if it's about time for the next planned dose. Do not take any more medication to make up for the missed dosage.

Get emergency medical care or call Poison Aid at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose signs can include sudden vision loss, extreme constipation, light-headedness, or fainting.
