To prevent nausea after surgery, take ondansetron by mouth 1 hour before the start of surgery. This drug can be taken with or without food. Your doctor may advise you not to eat before chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.

If you are taking the liquid version of this drug, use a special measuring spoon or instrument to measure the prescription dosage. Do not use a household spoon because you may not have the right dosage.

You should not use Zofran if you are using apomorphine (Apokyn) as well.

You should not use Zofran if you are allergic to ondansetron or related drugs such as dolasetron (Anzemet), granisetron (Kytril), or palonosetron (Aloxi).

Zofran oral disintegrating tablets may contain phenylalanine. Tell the doctor if you are getting phenylketonuria (PKU).

Severe side effects include blurred vision or transient vision loss (lasting for a few minutes or several hours), slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, nausea, agitation, shivering, feeling like you could be out, and urinating less than usual or not at all.
