Interfaith Food Center
The Interfaith Food Center (IFC) is a network of area houses of worship and individuals that provides low-income families in Whittier, La Mirada, and Santa Fe Springs with access to additional groceries through weekly deliveries from over 1,300 households utilizing its 6800 square foot warehouse/distribution facility. Food is supplied through donations from Los Angeles Regional Food Bank as well as local markets, churches, community organizations, and individual donors – offering food such as canned vegetables/fruits/cereal/bread/milk allotments along with pasta sauce/ beef ravioli/Tuna Fish (in addition to many others).
IFC provides food distribution as well as clothing closet services for all clients. In addition, we help individuals apply for public benefits and find housing while case advocates work one-on-one with clients to overcome barriers and access services that will support long-term recovery from poverty.
IFC was established in 2004 by members of the United Interfaith Food Bank (UIFB), an alliance among four southern Westchester houses of worship: Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont & Emanu-El, Shaarei Tikvah – The Scarsdale Conservative Congregation, and St James the Less Episcopal Church. Each place of worship raises funds through fundraising initiatives or targeted collection drives usually tied to holiday festivities to encourage its members to donate food and money – any money donations used to purchase additional purchases necessary due to insufficient in-kind contributions made directly by donors or by purchasing critical in-kind donations.
Family Table
Family Table, part of Hastings Family Service (HFS), provides kosher meals to needy families across Greater Boston and North Shore communities. Their mission is to end hunger while creating caring Jewish connections and empower individuals to incorporate healthier eating practices into their daily lives. Family Table serves over 100 towns.
Studies demonstrate that families that regularly gather around their family table for meals are healthier and more likely to communicate and cooperate than those who eat together less frequently. Families that eat together also tend to share values and traditions while supporting children’s accomplishments, discussing current events, and addressing any challenges more effectively.
Mealtime discussions can stimulate language development, help children manage emotions effectively, and teach them respect for others. Family-style dining allows children to serve their food and learn how to share with their siblings – it may even encourage picky eaters to try new foods by seeing other members consuming them!
Mealtimes are essential moments for all members of a family. Mealtime is the perfect opportunity for everyone in the household to come together after an exhausting day and set goals for the future, communicate and listen, discuss daily events, and enjoy each other’s company without being distracted. Furthermore, family meals can promote good health by limiting screen time and increasing physical activity.
