Princess Diana was one of the world’s foremost fashion icons, and one of her iconic dresses set an auction record recently. Worn in two 1991 portraits and the 1997 Vanity Fair photoshoot with Mario Testino, this aubergine velvet Victor Edelstein design from their 1989 autumn collection boasted a twisted sweetheart neckline and complete tulip skirt design for an eye-catching auction price of $604,800 (including premiums).
On Friday at an auction house, Diana’s dress was won by an anonymous bidder in a four and half minute bidding war and is now the most expensive dress ever sold from her estate, surpassing even John Travolta’s midnight blue velvet number from 1995, which also went for over $700,000.
Diana donated 79 dresses to charity in 1997–including this gown–that raised more than $3 Million for AIDS and cancer charities. Since its original sale, this dress has been preserved “thoroughly,” including its original sketch design and letters from Diana herself.
Victor Edelstein designed Diana’s dress. He also created several other iconic looks during her lifetime, such as the velvet evening dress she wore at Prince Charles and Diana’s White House dinner in 1985 and her black satin gown worn with diamond-encrusted amethyst Attallah cross necklace while posing for Vogue magazine in 1987.
