Oracle Cloud can be managed using either Applications Console or Infrastructure Classic Console, although you may also use traditional identity and access management software.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s Tenancy feature provides you with a safe and isolated area where you can organize and administer your cloud services. In your tenancy, you create and manage cloud resources like instances, block volumes, networks, and policies – as well as multiple compartments controlled through policies for access. Furthermore, each tenancy can have various boxes within it with access controlled through policies; additionally, it also lets you assign home regions.
Oracle will assign you a set of default policies and settings when creating your tenancy, providing basic security while giving you the flexibility to customize as necessary. In addition, you can specify a home region and assign permissions for individual users and groups.
Once you register for a free trial or purchase a subscription, Oracle assigns you a new tenancy and cloud account that identifies your tenancy – this account can be seen on the Console home page. For traditional metered subscriptions, your identity and access management software handles these details for you.
Your tenancy includes several services such as Compute, Storage, Object Storage, and Streaming that enable you to build and run applications, test solutions, and create new capabilities. They make up a highly scalable cloud environment, offering various deployment models and application architecture options.
Use the Console to tailor these services to meet your exact requirements. For instance, create a virtual cloud network (VCN) to distribute internet traffic across compute instances; configure a load balancer between compute cases and other components in your tenancy, such as databases or content hubs; create dashboards in the Console to monitor resources, diagnostics, and critical metrics of your residence; etc.
Oracle also provides additional optional services, including Container Engine for Kubernetes, Content Management, Vision, and Language to maximize cost savings, improve security, and foster productivity. Cloud Advisor is a service that detects inefficiencies in your operations and offers guided solutions to address them; Cloud Guard helps maintain a strong security posture by scanning cloud resources regularly for vulnerabilities while monitoring operators and users for risky activities.
Policy is a set of rules that determines who can access and use resources within your tenancy. Each tenancy can have multiple policies; you can create or edit existing policies to change how the rules apply in your residence, for instance, limiting how many instances an individual user can create or restricting what kind of data can be stored by individuals in it.
Oracle Cloud offers many ways for you to manage and customize your account on a day-to-day basis, from adding and removing users to setting up security for infrastructure and applications. In addition, tools like the Oracle Cloud Console and Management Center may assist in managing your account more effectively.
Sign up for a free trial or purchase a subscription to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services, with each service cost billed based on actual usage at the end of each billing cycle.
Once you’ve signed up for an Oracle Cloud Account, you can choose the subscriptions to add and activate them. Signing up for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure creates a root compartment. From there, additional rooms can be made to organize and access resources better within it. Containers provide a global logical namespace where policies can be enforced; each compartment can also have its dedicated administrator to help manage it independently from others in its region – which means you can delegate administration, organize functional groups of OCI environments into functional groups, deploy instances, VCNs, and block volumes without worry or compromise from other compartments within it.

Each time you create a new compartment, at least one policy must be assigned so users can access its resources. Group access may also be granted at the tenancy level so members of their group have access to all compartments within that tenancy. Permissions can also be inherited so that if access is granted for one parent compartment only, this automatically gives permissions across its hierarchy.
When moving a nested compartment that contains policies attached, these will immediately come into force in its new home. Metering, billing, and alarms will also be updated accordingly. Depending on the structure of your compartment hierarchy, however, you may need to move attached dependencies within that nested compartment so as to maintain access.
To manage an Oracle Cloud account effectively, administrators must log into the Console with a user who holds this role. They are able to create and manage users, apply subscriptions, modify (upsize or update), edit or delete free trials, and upgrade or terminate Oracle Store purchases.
Users with Oracle Cloud accounts and access to cloud services are known as users. When signing up for either a free trial or paid version, an identity domain and tenancy are assigned to you within Oracle’s infrastructure so you can create and manage cloud resources securely.
Every cloud resource has a unique Oracle Cloud Identifier (OCID), which can be used to quickly identify it in the Console and API.
An account administrator oversees and controls the services within their cloud account, from user access creation and provisioning to subscription upgrades/cancellations/purchases management. They may also assign service administrator roles – which vary between solutions but typically cover infrastructure as well as platform services – as well as creating and managing instances of cloud services.
