Julia Carpenter has earned the moniker Spider-Woman or Arachne by being injected with a mixture of spider venom and exotic plant extracts.
Jessica Drew is a pivotal character in the Spider-Man mythos. First appearing in Marvel Spotlight #32 and later in her ongoing series. Jessica is an accomplished private investigator able to track down both criminal masterminds and magical elements.
Her combat skills have proven effective against Morgan Le Fay’s ghost and those responsible for killing her father; additionally, she works closely with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jerry Hunt.
Miriam Drew had an unexpected beginning. Born to Jonathan and Merriam Drew, who both were high evolutionary biologists. Following this move to Transia, where her family ran a genetics lab exposing Miriam to uranium that caused grave illness; to save her, her father injected an experimental serum derived from genetically mutated spiders, which caused age deceleration in Miriam.
HYDRA eventually recruited her as an agent, using mental control powers to convince her she was actually an evolved spider and begin fighting against both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers. However, Magnus intervened and saved Jessica by providing her with a new body that still bore memories of her deceased father despite having lost them due to trauma caused by the earlier one’s demise. Jessica remains intent on taking revenge for his death by any means necessary. She continues her mission against S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.H.I.E.L.D. through combat and mental control powers against S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.H.I.E.L.D. Fighting the Avengers against S.H.I.E.L.D. in various battles against them all and began defending them all the while struggling against S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.H.I.E.L.D. after having lost all memories from him, Magnus took over host body so as revenge can. Magnus promised revenge, and although memories may have faded, she remains committed to seeking justice against S.H.I.E.L.D. for him killing off their mother!
After the Skrull Invasion, Spider-Woman is given an offer to regain her powers if she rejoins Hydra and infiltrates S.H.I.E.L.D. as a double agent. She accepts and becomes Veranke, later becoming involved with interdimensional conflicts as well as fighting for equal representation for women – and being Miles Morales’ ally when beginning his Spider-Man journey.
Julia Carpenter discovered she had acquired extraordinary powers after being exposed to spider venom via a project team’s injection, awakening with super strength, clinging to walls, and producing adhesive energy webs through thought alone. She quickly adopted the codename Arachne and joined numerous superpowered teams, including Force Works, Queen’s Vengeance, and Freedom Force/West Coast Avengers of the American government, though her powers often waned, and she lost them often over time. When Madame Web died battling Kraven’s heirs, she passed her precognitive abilities and blindness onto Julia as an inheritance from Madame Web.
Julia debuted during the Secret Wars crossover of 1984 when the all-powerful being known as The Beyonder transported her from Denver’s suburban area into Battleworld – an alien planet created by him as part of an elaborate scheme to force heroes and villains alike to battle for a portion of his immense power. While fighting alongside her peers for survival on Battleworld, Julia eventually fell victim to Charlotte Witter and had her powers taken from her; as a result, she decided that raising her daughter came first and retired from superheroing altogether.
Julia had lost all power until Mike Clemson kidnapped her daughter and forced her into slavery with his gang of spider-based assassins, eventually helping Mattie Franklin and other spider women battle these evil groups for several years while mentoring Peter Parker into becoming an even greater hero.
After losing her powers to Witter once more, Julia found refuge with vigilante Shroud, who had his company produce Napier’s spider serum for her use. Julia quickly recovered her powers and mobility thanks to Shroud and eventually fell in love with him as well. Under her codename, Arachne, she helped heroes fight against the Superhuman Registration Act while acting as a double agent for the Commission on Superhuman Activities.
While Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most well-known heroes, female wall-crawlers have also made significant strides within the franchise. We’ve rounded up some of these memorable female characters for your viewing pleasure!
Jessica Drew: Jessica Drew first made her debut as an unpowered detective in the live-action T.V. show Spidey Super Stories (an offshoot of the 1970s PBS kids’ show Spidey Super Stories). Since then, fans have become avid followers of this character, who offers an alternative take on superheroes.
Julia Carpenter: Julia is not your traditional female hero, having come from both criminal and detective parents. For decades, she existed as an unimportant minor character before making an official entrance into the Marvel Universe as part of the Avengers team in 2005.
Mayday Parker: In an alternate universe, Mayday Parker develops similar powers to that of her father (now retired as Spider-Man) and quickly becomes one of the most beloved characters on The C.W., even leading her series and spinoffs.
Gwen Stacy: Gwen Stacy was one of the stars of the 2018 film Across the Spider-Verse and made history as an uninhibited female wall-crawler, breaking new ground within the franchise as a nonwhite wall-crawler. Her popularity among comic book fans demonstrated their desire for more diverse female heroes leading stories.
Felicia Hardy is the shades-of-gray proprietor of the Black Cat nightclub, an attractive venue frequented by mobsters and criminals. As the master cat burglar who runs it, her morally ambiguous character blurs the lines between friend and foe, while her closeness with Ben Urich adds more intrigue to her adventures.
Charlotte Witter: Charlotte Witter is the granddaughter of Madame Web and an alluring femme fatale with spider-like abilities who has used them to fight crime for some time now. When depowered during her battle against Doctor Octopus, however, Charlotte took on some combined abilities of Jessica Julia Mattie and Mattie as well as some original ones of her own to help fight crime and return power into the fight!
May “Mayday” Parker first appeared in What If #105 (February 1998), which Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz created. Her presence inspired MC2 Publishing’s new ongoing Spider-Girl series that started publication shortly after that.
May took on the role of Spider-Girl against her parents’ objections and quickly established herself as one. She quickly made enemies of versions of classic Spider-Man villains such as Black Tarantula, Goblin with glider, Killerwatt, who could control electricity, as well as Norman Osborn’s son Normie, who needed convincing to join a loose superteam comprised of former criminals.
May’s life as a superhero is not without challenges. She must juggle the demands of school and her romantic relationship with Gene Thompson while also fighting crime. Some critics have even labeled her as a “hipster.”
At one point in Earth-616’s main timeline, a clone of May appeared and joined her father and baby brother Ben to fight as Spider-Man. Called April, this version was also a symbiote hybrid like Mayday, thus making April far more vicious but less skilled.
At one point during the Spider-Verse event, May’s clone sacrificed herself to save May from an explosion; Peter later assured her that clones often make comebacks. After this experience, May resumed her superheroine duties, often joining forces with Spider-Ham or other Spider-totems to protect dimensions without their hero, sometimes teaming up with Kaine or other reformed villains to combat criminals.
Anya Corazon, introduced as part of the Disassembled storyline, is an Amazonian teenager with a robust genetic legacy. Descended from a line of hunters dating back 900 years, Anya possesses superhuman strength combined with protective armor-enhancing powers. She has shown an aptitude for protecting the world against ancient and modern darkness alike.
She initially appeared as Arana but quickly adopted the moniker Spider-Girl after developing her powers. Anya is best friends with Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Miles Morales / Ultimate Spider-Man, and Gwen Stacy / Ghost-Spider and is considered to be one of the top students at Horizon High School.
Anya is a Latina born to a Puerto Rican father and a Mexican mother. She’s intelligent and robust, taking her responsibilities seriously; though sometimes annoyed by Miles’ positivity, Anya and Miles remain close friends.
As with other heroes who take up spider-related identities, Anya is highly agile and fast. She can climb walls easily, leap over buildings quickly, and run faster than any speeding car. Thanks to Spider-Island events, Anya now also possesses superhuman strength, accelerated healing timeframes, toughened flesh, and perhaps other uncharted spider-related abilities.
Anya stands out among superheroes with her unique set of abilities. While other Spider-Girls like Delilah, Shriek, and Felicia typically use their spider powers for physical attacks, such as physical threats Delilah and Shriek are used against, Anya can utilize hers to heal herself after injuries occur so she is able to maintain her heroism longer than most other Spider-Girls – this makes her an invaluable ally when fighting villains like Queen or Hobgoblin against her!
